Getting Out of Your Fashion Rut
I’m sure we would love to be able to shop all the time and be able to buy all the latest fashion trends. Of course we all want to be the best dressed girl on the block. If Carrie Bradshaw did it on a writer’s salary, we can do it too right?! …Hmmm no, not really! Carrie Bradshaw had a whole wardrobe department to dress her and all we have is our measly little closets.
This is where I come in to save the day (superhero music playing in the background)!! Most women have a good wardrobe they are just not challenging themselves or pushing the limits on what they wear.
Recently I found myself in a dreaded fashion rut. Wearing the same shirt with that same pair of pants and so on. It all seemed so boring and I didn’t even enjoy getting dressed in the morning. So there I was, in the same predicament every woman faces, standing in front of a closet full of clothes with nothing to wear. Right then I knew that I could do better than this! I knew I could make better use of my current wardrobe without having to go out and buy all new stuff (ok.. maybe a few new things, but just some necessities). My problem was I wasn’t challenging myself.
This is when my world changed… figuratively speaking. I started adding colored skinny belts to outfits that seemed boring, tucking in shirts that I usually wore tucked out, layering things on top of each other and adding more accessories. I mixed and matched clothes that didn’t really go together.. just to see, sometimes it worked, sometimes not. I also started trying stuff on that I wouldn’t normally wear. (Trying it on doesn’t mean you have to buy it, but it helps you to get out of your fashion comfort zone and try different things.) Also most importantly I organized my closet so all of the accessories, belts, jackets and shirts were all very visible. If you can’t see your wardrobe or things aren’t organized it makes it more difficult to pick out great outfits because you always feels as though you have worn it all before.
One of the things that I say all the time is, “things don’t have to match, they just have to go.” Meaning having some similar colors in common or colors that look good together like orange and teal or navy blue and hot pink, mint and brown, or lately you can get away with just about anything. While I’m on the subject of colors, just to be clear, all neutral colors match. This means any neutral color can be worn together. (Neutral colors: Black, White, Navy Blue, Cream ,Khaki, Brown, etc.).
Start having fun with your wardrobe and let getting dressed by an adventure, not a hassle. Have fun and stay fabulous!
