This will be tough week to predict the box office this weekend. I had to conjure up a cauldron of black magic to make my prediction since there is nothing new out in theaters this weekend that could take the top spot at the box office. One thing I will enjoy predicting is that Rock of Ages will disappoint at the box office. I hate musicals. I can’t stand singing and dancing on film so it always pains me to see a big budget musical invade the summer movie season. Lucky for me this campy, ridiculous, 80s sing a long movie is getting terrible reviews and I have not met one person who has seemed excited to see Rock of Ages. Stage to screen adaptations don’t always work, for every Annie there is a Rent or Evita that stink up the joint.
Also in out in theaters this weekend is Adam Sandler’s return to raunchy comedy in That’s My Boy. I did see this film early this week and it does have some laughs but not enough to take the top spot. Alex the lion and the rest of the Madagascar 3 crew will be kings of the box office again this weekend. The two major releases will have problems finding a large audience considering That’s My Boy is rated R and well Rock of Ages is a musical. Trust me I’m not the only person out there who thinks musicals are torture. Until Brave shoots its bow and arrows into theaters next week the animals will rule. I believe Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted will earn $39 million at the box office this weekend.
1. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – $39 Million
2. Rock of Ages – $31 Million
3. That’s My Boy - $27 Million
