The Arrow is Near
Two years ago I lost one of my favorite shows on The CW when Smallville ended its 10 year run. Since that time there has been an absence of super heroes on my television schedule each week. So when I heard The CW was developing a stand alone series based on DC Comics Green Arrow, my geek barometer started to rise with excitement. I was disappointed at first over the choice not spin-off the version of the Green Arrow/Oliver Queen (played by Justin Hartley) that appeared on several seasons of Smallville. Though I began to come around on the idea when the network stated they were taking a Batman Begins style approach to the pilot.
Images of the new Oliver Queen played by Stephen Amell emerged online showing a grittier version of the crime fighter who watches over Starling City. The pilot was picked up by The CW and a few lucky people, including myself got the to see the first episode. The pilot for Arrow exceeded my expectations, but more on that a little later. The CW took the cast including the beautiful Katie Cassidy (Gossip Girl and Supernatural), who was cast as Dinah Laurel Lance at Comic-Con this past summer. The cast and creators wowed the ballroom with footage of the new show. Cassidy was bombarded with the questions about her alter ego, the Black Canary, making an appearance on the show. Arrow left Comic-Con as one of the most buzzed about panels of the event.
Comic nerds then went into a frenzy when the show went into production and casting was announced for Arrow. The DC universe expansion was happening on Arrow. China White, Deadshot and Deathstroke will all appear in the first season of Arrow to battle Oliver Queen. The sky is the limit for characters from the DC Universe to appear since Warner Brothers Television has exclusive rights to DC Comics properties. Be sure to check out both of my columns I wrote suggesting which DC Heroes and Villains who could show up on the series in the future.
I can state that without a doubt that Arrow is the best new show of the television this season. I know some people may think I’m biased when it comes to this subject and that’s fine considering who I work for. But believe it or not I do watch shows on other networks. It’s not like I just watch CW programing. In fact I have been critical of CW shows in the past like the slow-moving Ringer or the ill-fated Melrose Place reboot, but not this time. The CW has knocked it out of the park with Arrow. The show will have two great stories within one show. You will see familiar DC characters including a hint to DeathStroke in the pilot. Stephen Amell is great in the lead, dueling out vigilante justice that makes you forget all about Justin Hartley. Don’t worry about Hartley, he’s got a new job playing Will Rider on the new CW show Emily Owens M.D. premiering October 16th at 9pm.
Believe me when I say you will not be disappointed with Arrow. It’s the best new show The CW has aired since The Vampire Diaries. Tune in this Wednesday at 8pm on The CW for the premiere of Arrow. I will be live tweeting during the premiere episode so follow me on Twitter @CW44CouchPotato and let me know what you think of the show.
