Reporting CW44′s Couch Potato
We are smack dab in the middle of the “Dead Zone” for movies right now. We have to find a way to get excited over ex California Governors, kids fables and zombies with feelings. So instead of sulking over the lack of quality releases, I say we look ahead to the movies that will actually excite and entertain movie goers in 2013. So in the edition of “The 4″, we will take a look at four films to watch in 2013.
1. Iron Man 3
This will be the first test for Marvel and Disney to see if they can keep their post Avengers momentum going. The third installment of the Iron Man franchise has Tony Stark(Robert Downey Jr.) with some post Avengers blues after the battle in New York. The changes in Tony’s life aren’t the only problem for our hero. Iron Man’s main antagonist from the comics the Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley wreaks havoc in Mr. Stark’s life. The previews so far gives the film an Empire Strikes Back tone with Tony being stripped down to his bare essentials. It’s crazy to think that if this next installment doesn’t make as much as The Avengers, it would be deemed by some as a failure. The thought is out there. I predict Iron Man 3 will be huge, just not $600 million huge.
2. Man of Steel
Can Warner Brothers and DC Comics create a hit without Gotham’s Caped Crusader involved? That is the question that will be answered when Man of Steel hits theaters in June. Superman has not been able to successfully take flight for the past thirty years. We haven’t had a quality Superman film on the big screen since Superman II, so there’s a lot riding on the success of this film. For one thing Warner Brothers has stated they want Man of Steel to be the building block for the Justice League movie, just as Iron Man was for The Avengers. Will see if the involvement of Christopher Nolan and a real life look at the Kryptonian can get viewers excited again.
3. Anchorman: The Legend Continues
I work in television so there’s no way on earth this movie wasn’t going to make the list. It will be over eight years since we have seen Ron Burgundy and San Diego’s Channel 4′s News Team in action when Anchorman: The Legend Continues hits theaters in the fall. The plot has been kept a secret and all we know so far is the original cast is returning. I was hoping that the story would take place in the 1980s, but sources did confirm it would take place in the 1970s once again. Anchorman is one of those quotable movies that people hold in high regard so expectations will be high for the sequel. I for one can’t wait to see the Channel 4 News Team reporting breaking news in the Whale’s Vagina, I mean San Diego.
4. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
I thought the first Hunger Games film was okay. I didn’t think it was the end all be all of films, but you can’t deny the first film’s box office success. So I expect the same box office numbers from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Plus Jennifer Lawrence is a bona fide Hollywood star. Girls her age just don’t do what she has accomplished in Hollywood. Lawrence is able to star in studio tent pole movies( The Hunger Games, X-Men: The First Class) and gain critical acclaim for roles in Winter’s Bone and Silver Linings Playbook. The girl has box office muscles, two Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe win under her belt. So by the time The Hunger Games: Catching Fire arrives in November, she could be the biggest female star in Hollywood.
