Seth MacFarlane: Oscars’ Sort-of Good Host

Seth McFarlane hosted the 85th Academy Awards with much surprise from just about everyone.  This guy is notorious for throwing out cruel jokes at Hollywood stars on his many animated shows.  Why on earth would the Academy Awards decide he was the best choice? Probably because the Golden Globes already snapped up Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.  However, upon watching the awards show, I think I speak for everyone as we were pleasantly surprised (mostly).  From watching Family Guy and American Dad, it’s clear that Seth MacFarlane has a gift for voice work.

The theme of the night became unbelievably clearer once MacFarlane began singing his first tune of the night “We Saw Your Boobs.”  Regardless of this first funny but somewhat tasteless song, MacFarlane sounded like a professionally trained musical theatre singer.  Who knew he had pipes worthy of the theatre and live performance? Apparently quite a few people.  According to the Huffington Post, MacFarlane has sang at Carnegie Hall and Royal Albert Hall.

In addition to his amazing singing, he did the best job at the Oscars when he wasn’t trying to be funny.  The opening sequence had some wit especially with the appearance of Captain Kirk.  But did it really have to be 17 minutes long? No sir. I found his funniest jokes came as the most unprepared.  “I thought we cut this joke out, but here we go.”  As a fan of MacFarlane’s many FOX shows, I found his jokes great.  Even the joke about John Wilkes Booth had me chuckling, especially after the audience gasped.

Overall, good job, Seth! Not to mention your performance as Ted during the award for Best Sound Mixing. “Only Jews survive in this business!”

What did you think of MacFarlane’s performance?
