If you’ve read any of my family film reviews or seen ’44 on the Town’ that airs every Sunday at 11am on CW44 (cheap plug), I’ve gained the reputation as the ‘Kid Movie Killer’. I don’t believe that assumption to be true. I love quality animated family fare like The Lego Movie, Wreck-It Ralph and The Lion King which are entertaining for all family members despite their age or gender. What I don’t like is cheap attempts at animated movies just looking to make a buck (The Nut Job, Rio, Free Birds) or films like Frozen that just caters to girls (you know it’s true). Now we have the new animated feature Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return that not only looks like it should be a Redbox knock off title – it messes with the sacred material that is The Wizard of Oz.
Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return is a pitiful excuse for a family feature and even a worse companion piece to The Wizard of Oz. I actually didn’t mind Oz: The Great and Powerful, but this new film is horrible even for kid movie standards. Besides the simple animation, bad jokes and awful songs – Dorothy wears cowboy boots. Let my type that again. Cowboy boots. I know there are licensing restrictions that prevent the ruby-red slippers from appearing on-screen, but seriously. Cowboy boots. The audience is also treated to cheap characters like a fat owl, a marshmallow soldier and a princess china doll stand-in for the classic characters we actually care about from the original.
Speaking of the trio from the original – the treatment the Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man is nothing short of an abomination. I’m not even going to name the voice talent involved in this movie because they should be embarrassed enough for being involved in this poor attempt at family entertainment. When I say Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, is bad, I truly mean it’s the worst movie I’ve seen in a very long time; even by crummy kid’s movie standards. I have no idea why this movie was even made. Get ready for something that has never happened before.
Overall, I give Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return the first ever 0 out of 4 stars.
