Movie Review: The Giver
I have never read The Giver, but if it’s as boring as the new film adaptation starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Brenton Thwaites as the receiver of knowledge Jonas – I’m glad I never read it. Jonas lives in a perfect world where war, pain, suffering and life choices are all extinct. You are controlled by the powers that be to the point where you don’t even see the color in life anymore. It’s a concept we have seen many times before in Logan’s Run, 1984, Pleasantville and earlier this year in the lackluster Divergent. What’s worse is Divergent is actually a more exciting than The Giver.
The biggest problem with The Giver is nothing really happens. Jonas is chosen to be the receiver of information and for the most part he just sits around locking arms with Bridges’ The Giver. The audience is treated to flashing imagery of normal life. I get what The Giver was going for with Jonas discovering the wonder of life and personal thought. It’s just so boring. Nothing happens.
The Giver just leaves us with a bunch of great actors left to wallow in this uneventful tale of a utopian society. The effects are bad, the acting from the youngsters in The Giver is stale and I was surprised by the hoopla surrounding this movie. The book may be beloved, but The Giver on film is a dud.
Overall, The Giver earns the rating of 2 out of 4 stars.
