As summer wraps up, the need for serious playtime increases. After all of that back-to-school shopping, registering and planning, the true fun is in the few days of calm before the storm. Fill those remaining vacation days with five fun things to do before school starts.

Port Richey Waterfront Park is a great place for the family to spend an afternoon fishing, swimming and playing in a beautiful relaxing setting. This park features a long fishing pier, a small walking bridge and a lake to fish in. Kids may expore a fenced playground with slides, teeter-totters and swings as well. Port Richey Waterfront Park also boasts a small floating dock for launching canoes and kayaks, as well as for swimming. The park also offers restrooms, a covered pavilion, picnic tables and a walking/biking trail.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is a fantastic place to spend a hot, summer day in Florida. Enjoy mermaid shows, animal shows and a water park with slides. The water park section also boasts a small kiddy section where water squirts out of various animal shapes to keep the little ones entertained without getting run over. Also for the little ones, the fun slide here provides plenty of fun entertainment.

MOSI Museum of Science & Industry in Tampa is a great place for the whole family to spend the afternoon in a fun-filled, educational setting. MOSI Museum has a special section just for kids that includes ample hands-on activities. It even offers a wide variety of workshops and classes the entire family can enjoy together. Visit the butterfly garden and the WeatherQuest exhibit for extra fun during a day here.

This small aquarium at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks offers snake exhibits in addition to opportunities to watch a diver feed the sharks and other live fish, and even pet a baby alligator. The aquarium’s a manta ray tank allows visitors to pet the manta rays and even purchase food to feed them. For the really brave, food may be purchased and fed to the sharks by using a long stick as well.
