With a new year right around the corner, it’s time to kick those bad makeup habits. We are going to start fresh this year fixing those mistakes and learning some new tricks.

Let’s get right to it!

Mistakes + Resolutions

Mistake #1 – Not using a primer.

Resolution #1 – You don’t need to spend a ton of money on a primer, just make sure to get one that works well with your skin. I use the Neutrogena Shine Control primer, it’s under $12 and the bottle lasts for a while.

***Avoid using moisturizer and primer at the same time. I recommend finding a primer that has moisturizing properties if you have dry skin.

Mistake #2 – Layering your concealer in the wrong order.

Resolution #2 – Your concealer should be applied on top of your foundation, not underneath like most people think. Blend it in well with your fingers or a brush and then set everything with some your powder.

Mistake #3 – Winged eyeliner issues.

Resolutions #3 – Have the winged liner directed towards the end of your brow (see example below). Also the easiest way to apply a great winged look is with a super thin brush.

***Open your eye and look at your liner as you’re applying it to make sure it’s in the correct place when your eye is open.

Mistake #4 – Blush location.

Resolution #4 – Application and location are the main issues here. Smile in the mirror and apply a light amount of blush on the meaty part of your cheeks and blend upwards.

***Also if you don’t wear blush, you really should, when applied right it helps your face look youthful and fresh.

Mistake #5 – Applying lipstick without a liner.

Resolution #5 – If you ever wondered why your lipstick never looks quite right, it’s because you’re not using a lip liner. This simple step, applying a liner, will make all the difference.

***To make your lipstick last longer, use the liner to fill in your entire lip, then apply your lipstick.

Mistake #6 – Eyebrows that are too sparse or too dark.

Resolution #6 – Eyebrows have become extremely important in the make-up world so filling them in has become very important, but we have to be careful that we don’t make them look like they are drawn on. A great way to avoid this is to make sure that you are using the correct color (a shade lighter if you have dark hair, or a shade darker if you have light hair) and make sure to use a clean mascara wand to brush your brows while you’re applying color to them, this will keep them looking natural.

Mistake #7 – Eyelash curling the old way.

Resolution #7 – If you’re not using an eyelash curler that’s your first mistake. Another mistake is keeping the curler in the same position on your eye, you should be moving the curler up your lashes as you go, also tilting the curler downward (almost perpendicular to your eye.) Remember not to squeeze too hard, you do not want a crease in your lashes. My last tip is to heat up the curler for 10 seconds or so with your blow dryer, just be careful not to get it too hot.

Mistake #8 – Applying eyeshadow in the wrong order.

Resolution #8 – When applying a blended eyeshadow look, it is important to start with the lighter color first and gradually layer on the darker colors while blending. Most people start the other way around with the darkest color and then try to blend a lighter color on top. This ends up making a muddled looking mess, as opposed to a blended look or smoky eye.
