So, you’re enjoying your sunny Florida January when… BOOM, something outrageous happens! Florida gets hit with a cold snap. If you’re a true-blue Floridan, you know just how devastating this is. You pull your boots and coats out of the caverns of your closet, but it isn’t enough. You need something more.

You need hot chocolate! Nothing warms the cockles of the heart more than a creamy cup of hot cocoa. So ditch the store-bought powder and try one of these unique recipes during this chilly time of year.

New Mexican Hot Chocolate (SKINNY Recipe!) | Via

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups 2% reduced-fat milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


Do: Combine water, honey, cocoa, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Gradually add milk and extract, stirring constantly with a whisk. Heat to 180° or until tiny bubbles form around edge, stirring with a whisk (do not boil). Serve. 117 calories, 3g fat.


White Hot Chocolate | Via


  • 4 cups of milk (or heavy cream or half and half)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 8 oz. white chocolate, chopped into small pieces (or white chocolate chips)
  • whipped cream or marshmallows for topping


Do: Stir together milk, vanilla and chopped white chocolate in a medium saucepan.  Cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the white hot chocolate comes to a simmer.  (DON’T BOIL)  Remove from heat and serve immediately, topped with whipped cream or marshmallows.


Nutella Hot Chocolate | Via


  • 2 cups full cream milk
  • 1/3 cup Nutella
  • mini marshmallows

Do: Scald milk in a pot. Whisk in Nutella. Turn off fire. Transfer to mugs and top with marshmallows.


Red Velvet Hot Cocoa with Homemade Whipped Cream | Via


  • 1 cup of skim
  • 1/2 cup of chopped bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate (or chocolate chips)
  • 1 – 1 1/2 tsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla

For the whipped cream:

  • 1/4 cup of heavy cream
  • 1 Tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla


Do: Heat the milk over medium. Whisk in the chocolate, and stir until melted. Stir in the food coloring and vanilla. Whip the cream with the sugar and vanilla. Serve topped with whip and chocolate shavings.


Cioccolata Calda (Italian Hot Chocolate) | Via


  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • 2 tbsp corn starch
  • 4 ounces of 60%-70% dark chocolate
  • 1 1/2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 1/2 tbsp of cocoa powder


Do: Pour milk in a small pan and sift in corn starch. Then sift in cocoa powder. Stir with a whisk. Add the sugar. Break up dark chocolate and melt it in the microwave or double boiler. When milk almost comes to a boil, add the melted chocolate, mix well with a whisk and let thicken. Add more sugar if needed.
