Some may say I’m a little late on delivering my 2015 movie preview. I understand we had some big hits already this year. American Sniper proved you can have a big hit in January, but technically American Sniper was a 2014 release. We are currently in the middle of the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomena, but I expect after a huge push in the first two weekends. The box office number will decrease and the film will mostly be forgotten by July. So in my opinion the four movies to keep an eye on in 2015 are still to come. For better or for worse, here’s ‘The 4: 2015 Movie Preview’.
1. Avengers: Age of Ultron (5-1-2015)
At the end of Avengers, we all thought we would see our band of heroes take on the mad titan Thanos in this sequel. The mouse had a grand plan so will have to wait a few more years for the Infinity Wars. Never fear, because Whedon gives us another big bad in the form of the self aware and evil Robot Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron. From the looks of the trailer, things look to be much darker this time around with group battling a villain who is Hell bent on human extinction. Marvel flexed their casting muscles by getting James Spader to lend his evil voice to the android adversary. Expect big changes after this installment which will change up the MCU from here on out. Plus we get the twins, secret cameos and the Hulkbuster armor in action. Expect Avengers: Age of Ultron to be the box office champ for the summer and maybe all of 2015. More on that later in this list.
2. Jurassic World (6-12-15)
Once upon a time dinosaurs ruled the box office, but for the last fourteen years the cloned dinosaurs of the Jurassic Park franchise have been all but extinct. That will change this June when the park is finally open for business with Jurassic World. Part sequel/ Part reboot, the franchise takes us to time where the park has become exactly what Dr. Hammond said. Living biological attractions so astounding that they captured the imagination of the entire planet. The park is a huge hit at first then sales decline and other options are explored. Unfortunately man screws it up again by creating a viscous new dinosaur to attract tourists that inevitably gets loose in the park and causes chaos. Luckily Chris Pratt is there to save us with his trained pack of Raptors. The helpful raptors do give me concern, but the rest of the Jurassic World preview looked awesome. Sea dinosaur shows, a massive new predator and it doesn’t hurt to have one of the hottest stars in Hollywood in the lead. Jurassic World looks like a great big popcorn flick which is the type of thrilling ride we look forward to taking at the movies during the heart of the summer. As long as Téa Leoni doesn’t show up we should be fine.
3. Fantastic Four (8-7-15)
Every year when I make ‘The 4’ yearly movie previews, one film makes the list for the wrong reasons. Last year it was The Amazing Spiderman 2 that was added to the list for the wrong reasons. I was totally right with the prediction of a negative reaction towards that sequel and this year I have a feeling this same fate will happen to the Fantastic Four reboot. I thought about putting Marvel’s Ant-Man in this spot since I don’t have the same Guardians type for faith for Marvel’s next solo project, but I believe Marvel and Disney could put a file cabinet in a movie and have a box office hit. The new Fantastic Four does not have this luxurious legacy to fall back on. The first Fantastic Four franchise was a silly adaptation that didn’t come close to giving the proper respect to Marvel’s first family. Now Fox is back with a new younger reboot and they have changed so much of the recognized story DNA of the Fantastic Four. The changes have made fans like myself groan who loved the Fantastic Four comic series. I will say the trailer did give me a glimmer of hope and Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan are all great up and coming actors in Hollywood. Still if I was betting man, I would assume that 20th Century Fox screws up my beloved space explores again.
Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens (12-18-15)
Here’s the biggest film of 2015 and the one we will have to wait the longest for. Disney waisted no time firing up the boosters and getting the Star Wars franchise back in theaters with a companion trilogy building off the original trilogy (IV-VI) that we loved so much. Little is still known about Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. Rumors have swirled about a crazy Luke Skywalker, an abandoned AT-AT secret hideout and more Hutts. A couple of things we do know from the short teaser that caused twitter to explode. The Force Awakens is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, there’s a new light saber and the Millennium Falcon is back. Other than that, nothing has been confirmed or denied by the original and new cast members. One thing is for sure. Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens could very well be the biggest movie of the year. It must be nice being the Mouse with Star Wars and the Avengers battling it out for the 2015 box office crown.
