Considering the growth of the transgender movement over the last decade, The Danish Girl could be seen as a movie for our times even though the film takes place in Copenhagen in the early 1920s. The film is a biographical drama based on the life of transgender trailblazer Einar Wegener who started living as Lili while still married to his wife and fellow artist Gerda Wegener. The Danish Girl screams of Oscar bait and last year’s Lead Actor Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne could be eyeing another little statue made of gold this year for his work in the film.

The Danish Girl isn’t a flashy story of someone discovering who they are and flaunting it for the whole world to see. The film is quite slow at times and chooses to takes its time examining the transition of Einar to Lili. Just because The Danish Girl is slow, doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. The film is an intimate character study about two people going through a life changing and uncanny experience. The reason The Danish Girl works as a final product is the superb acting job from Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander.

The role of Lili in The Danish Girl is tailor-made to receive major award attention and Redmayne takes advantage of the opportunity to bring this unique individual to life. Redmayne shows off his versatility getting two play two characters with one role, but his acting companion Alicia Vikander delivers the best acting in the film. Vikander’s portrayal of Gerda is an interesting character that will have the audience questioning her motives and wondering what she’s thinking throughout the film. The young actress manages to steal the spotlight from Redmayne at times which is no easy task considering that role and the acting talent involved.

The Danish Girl is a very interesting watch for anyone who is wondering what the process is like for someone making this intense lifestyle change. The film will make you think even if you look at your watch a few times during the running time. The Danish Girl may suffer from a sluggish pace, but the acting on display has to be respected.

Overall, I give The Danish Girl 3 out of 4 stars.
